It’s March 4. Do you know what day it is? National Grammar Day, the national day (or is that national Day?) that was established in 2008 by Martha Brockenbrough, founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar (SPOGG) and author of Things That Make Us [Sic].
In recent years, National Grammar Day has been hosted by Mignon Fogarty, the author of the New York Times best-selling book Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing. Mignon has even recorded a song in honor of this day—March Forth: the Grammar Song.
Thanks, Martha and Mignon, for keeping grammar in the public eye. I clink commas with you both and with anyone who cares to join us in celebrating words and all the squiggles that bind, separate, and otherwise punctuate them.
